Richard Lerman: Fences-Borders

Jack Straw New Media Gallery, Seattle; co-presented with Jack Straw Productions.

This sound & video installation investigates the US/Mexico border as metaphor and harsh reality. Richard Lerman, a veteran intermedia artist and master of the contact microphone, made numerous field recordings of the steel fences separating the two countries. Using home-built transducers and amplifiers, these sounds are played back through a giant coil of bougainvillea vine dividing the gallery like razor wire. A laser intermittently surveils the border on aerial photo maps lining the walls, while projected video documents the recording sites.
